Shahrizat Abdul Jalil
The Honourable Senator Shahrizat Abdul Jalil is the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development of Malaysia. Her portfolio includes the Women’s Development Department, National Population and Family Development Board, Social Welfare Department, Malaysia Social Institute and NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women. On the 14th December 1999 she was appointed as a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and on the 11th May 1995 as a Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Previously, she was also a Magistrate, an Assistant Treasury Solicitor and an Advocate and a Solicitor. On the 19th of Mac 2008 she was appointed by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdullah Hj Ahmad Badawi as the Special Advisor on Women and Social Development to The Prime Minister. The Honourable Senator Shahrizat received her early education in English and Arabic from Northam Road Girl’s School and Madrasah Tarbiah Islamiah in the Pulau Pinang respectively. She then pursued her secondary education at St. Georges’ Girls School and gained her entry to Tunku Kurshiah College, one of the prestigious boarding schools in Malaysia. This was followed by entry to the University of Malaya in 1973 where she read law. She received her law degree LLB (Hons) in 1976. Before joining politics, she was an active member of the corporate world. She was a Director of several public-listed companies. She made history when she became the first Malaysian woman to be the Chairman of a conglomerate of two public listed companies on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE), namely Island & Peninsular Berhad and Austral Enterprises Berhad. On the 24th of Mac 2009 the Honourable Senator Shahrizat was appointed as the Head of Wanita UMNO (United Malays National Organisation), the women’s wing of UMNO. UMNO is a leading Malay political party largely responsible for Malaysia’s independence in 1957. In the 1995 General Election she was one of the women candidates to be fielded in Kuala Lumpur. She retained her city constituency seat of Lembah Pantai in the 1999 and 2004 General Election, creating history by becoming the first Member of Parliament to serve the Lembah Pantai constituency for three consecutive terms. The Honorable Senator Shahrizat Abdul Jalil is married to Datuk Dr. Mohamad Salleh Ismail, a scientist and has three children. *The Hon. Senator Shahrizat Abdul Jalil was appointed as the Minister of Women and Family Development on January 30th, 2001, as the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development on March 30th 2004 - March 8th 2008 and as Acting Federal Territories Minister from 17 October 2005 – 14 February 2006. Reappointed as the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development from 9th April 2009 – present.
